Travel Tips

Hotel Health

It’s a dirty little secret. When you travel, everything you touch in your hotel room is a public surface, and many of the surfaces you touch are not cleaned after each guest check-out.

Bed Bugs are Back

Virtually eradicated in the United States in 1950’s, bed bugs have made a resounding recovery, and infestations have been found in the finest domestic and international hotels.  While they don’t typically carry disease, bed bugs cause itchy bites, and may hitch a ride home with you on your clothing or luggage. Once established in your home, they are very difficult to get rid of.

As soon as you arrive at your hotel, look for small rusty or dark brown spots on the bedding, mattress, and in the corners of the room.  Bed bugs love the dark, so check the nightstand, behind the headboard, and under or behind any other furniture or fixtures within 15 feet or so of the bed. Use the luggage stand to keep your bags off the floor, and check your luggage and clothing carefully before you leave. Should you find evidence of bed bugs on your belongings, treat your luggage and contents immediately.

Bedding

The bed is typically the largest feature of the room, and as a result the bedspread gets a lot of use – sitting, reading, watching TV, etc. Bedspreads are not washed daily – in fact they may be cleaned just once a month or less. Blankets and pillows are not on the daily laundry list either, and dust mites, dander and other human detritus can be a problem for those with allergies.

As soon as you enter your room, remove the bedspread, fold it up, and stow it in a corner for the duration of your stay. If you wish to avoid contact with pillows and blankets, use a sleep sack.

Carpet

While carpets are vacuumed daily, they are rarely shampooed, and dirt and germs are left behind. Wear shoes or slippers, and never walk barefoot on the carpet.

Drinking Glasses, Ice Buckets and Coffee Makers

Several news reports have captured hotel housekeeping on tape giving glasses a just cursory rinse, wiping them “clean” with the same rags that cleaned the bathroom and drying them with used towels in preparation for the next guest (ice buckets and coffee makers often receive the same treatment). Many viruses and bacteria can live for extended periods on these surfaces.

Wash glassware, ice buckets and coffeemakers in hot, soapy water before using, or bring your own travel cup for extra peace of mind.

TV Remote, Phone, Alarm Clock, Light Switches and Doorknobs

It is unlikely that any of these often-touched items are cleaned on a regular basis. Clean them with disinfectant spray (a small can of Lysol packs very nicely!) or wipes, and use hand sanitizer frequently.

Union in Dispute with Disneyland Ups the Ante ----

---- when members of the Unite HERE Local 11 were reportedly seen handing out flyers near Disneyland. Normally this would be an acceptable behavior for a union that is in a three year dispute with the theme park and resort over benefits, working conditions, and wages for its members. But this time they may have gone a step too far.

These handouts are not in the form of warnings about Disney’s anti-union practices, but rather warning parents about how Disneyland is a magnet for “Pedophiles”.

Using misleading statistics to scare tourists is lower than low. It hurts the potential future earnings of the union employees and makes the union look bad for using scare tactics. The headlines suggest that Disneyland is infested with dangerous people, but the Anaheim Police investigations for “sex offenses” cover a whole range of incidents, not inappropriate behavior of an adult to a child, but adult on adult and child on child. There is no statistical relevance to that charge.

Disney files permits to Raze Parts of Pleasure Island ----

---- according to the Save Pleasure Island blog, Disney has filed permits to demolish the former BET Soundstage building (rumored to have significant weather damage) together with the Adventurer’s Club. Plus they will install a Valet parking area. Additional work will be down on the walking patterns for the area, but nothing so far for the buildings that housed the Comedy Warehouse and the small stores on that side.

Disney Cruise Line News ----

---- Disney Cruise Line was recognized last week as the No. 1 cruise experience at the Annual Readers' Choice Awards for Conde Nast Traveler magazine in New York City. Known as the leader in family cruising, Disney Cruise Line took the top honors in the Mega-Ship category, which is part of the magazine's annual readers' survey that recognizes the best in travel for resorts, destinations, airlines, cruise lines and car rental agencies. In addition, the readers of Travel + Leisure magazine recently named Disney Cruise Line the Top Family-Friendly Large-Ship Cruise Line in the 2010 World's Best Awards poll.

---- The Disney Fantasy will sail her maiden voyage on April 7, 2012. A sister ship to the Disney Dream (which will set sail January 26, 2011), the Disney Fantasy will feature an AquaDuck water coaster, magical children's areas, world-class entertainment, delightful dining, retreats for adults and immersive experiences for guests of all ages with beloved Disney stories and characters. The Disney Fantasy will sail out of Port Canaveral on the popular seven-night Caribbean itineraries -- alternating eastern and western -- including a stop at Disney's private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay. The Disney Dream will continue to sail three-, four- and five-night cruises to the Bahamas and Castaway Cay, while the Disney Wonder will remain on the west coast, sailing Mexican Riviera itineraries from the Port of Los Angeles. To start the 2012 season, the Disney Magic will sail alternating eastern and western Caribbean itineraries.

Your Land of Mickey Recipe :

Great Fall Recipe!!

Roasted Pork Chops with Hard Cider Jus

Wilderness Lodge - WDW

INGREDIENTS:

8 (1-inch-thick) rib pork chops (4 lb total)

         1 teaspoon fine sea salt

         1 1/4 teaspoons black pepper

         2 1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 lb large shallots (8), bulbs separated if necessary and each bulb halved lengthwise

         1 cup hard cider

         Special equipment: an instant-read thermometer

PREPARATION:

1.  Preheat oven to 450°F.

2.  Pat pork chops dry and sprinkle both sides with sea salt and pepper. Heat 1 1/2 tablespoons butter in a 12-inch heavy skillet over moderately high heat until foam subsides, then brown chops in 3 batches, turning once, 6 minutes per batch, and transfer with tongs to a large shallow baking pan (1 inch deep).

3.  Add shallots and remaining tablespoon butter to skillet and cook over moderate heat, turning occasionally, until golden brown and tender, 6 to 8 minutes. Add cider and boil, stirring and scraping up brown bits, until reduced to about 3/4 cup, about 3 minutes.

4.  Spoon shallots and sauce around chops and roast in lower third of oven until thermometer inserted horizontally into center of 1 chop (do not touch bone) registers 150°F, 7 to 9 minutes.

5.  Let chops stand, loosely covered with foil, 5 minutes (temperature will rise to 155°F while standing). Serve chops with shallots and sauce.

Makes 4 servings.
